During the last 12 months the Ultrasound Department has been conducting a renal audit.
The reason a renal audit is being undertaken is for us to identify any anomalies between Sonographers and Radiologists when scanning kidneys. This has been a simple audit incorporating checking kidney size, texture and any other aspect associated with the kidney.
Hopefully the outcome of this audit will show that we all check and measure kidneys within what may be considered the normal range. If there are any major discrepancies the audit will highlight this and will enable us to change our practice accordingly.
This audit is due to end in March 2001, the results will then be available.
The debate is concerned with whether or not it is ethical to look at organs other than those requested by the referring clinician.
Following the debate with the Ethics Committee the findings are due to be presented at a British Medical Ultrasound Society Study day in Liverpool on 27th June 2001.
