The Lead Clinician is concerned mainly with the clinical aspects of the service, rather than the day to day running.
In this respect I have overall clinical responsibility regarding the clinical output from our department.
We have a continuing, rolling self-audit programme in which we monitor our own working practice and the quality of our output.
We investigate a very wide range of conditions and symptoms and sometimes we feel that just about everybody who walks through the Trust doors comes to us in one way or another.
My role is to review the clinical needs for ultrasound, to advise on further investigations when abnormalities are found and to act as a co-ordinator between the various ultrasound practitioners who work in the department.
In practice the majority of the ultrasound examinations carried out at our Trust are carried out by our "ultrasound practitioners", all of them referred to as "senior Sonographers". They are all highly trained and well motivated and produce a very high standard of ultrasound imaging service.
Any clinical issues in respect to ultrasound services should be directed to me, in the first instance, and I will act as appropriate.
