POSTS
These are four replacement posts for general radiologists with sub-speciality interest. An interest in chest, paediatric or interventional radiology would be particularly welcome but most other sub-specialties can be accommodated. Each new appointee would be invited to take the lead role in one or more areas.
Candidates must hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists or an equivalent qualification and should be broadly trained in radiology. Candidates should be already on the G.M.C. Specialist Register or within three months of the appropriate C.S.S.T. award.
The posts are offered on a whole-time/maximum part-time basis, however the Trust will endeavour to support people wanting job share or other flexible part-time arrangements.
Peterborough Hospitals N.H.S. Trust is an acute district general hospital, currently on two sites two miles apart. Provisional approval has been granted for a private finance initiative which will enable the Trust to move to one site within the next few years.
With the appointment of these posts, there will be seven full-time and two part-time consultant radiologists in the Trust. The general workload is evenly distributed with each consultant providing a lead role in a specialised area.

Radiology Department
The workload of this busy department is managed by the radiological and radiographic team currently covering several sites. Peterborough has been in the vanguard of extended role radiography, with experienced senior radiographers now performing casualty and orthopaedic film reporting, and reading of screening mammograms. Barium enemas and IVPs are performed by radiographers with subsequent reporting by radiologists. Simple filling cystometries are undertaken by a nurse and a radiographer. Qualified sonographers report on their own general ultrasound scans with appropriate advice from radiologists, they have recently taken on aspects of the paediatric service. At present some of the radiology work is undertaken during funded extra sessions and by visiting consultants.
Senior radiographers in speciality areas take responsibility, under the supervision of radiologists, for aspects of vetting and forward planning of workload. Sessions are planned to balance adequate throughput of outpatient studies whilst leaving time to respond appropriately to urgent and inpatient cases, facilitating consistent quality even at busy times. Areas such as CT and MR perform certain categories of examinations on unsupervised lists. Staff in nuclear medicine also plan their own work consulting with the "duty radiologist" for medical input.
This high level of support from experienced radiographic staff facilitates concentration by radiologists on sub-speciality interests and the more challenging aspects of the Radiology service.
There is potential and enthusiasm for further developments to the service. We are looking for colleagues with innovative ideas and a willingness to work with newly appointed clinicians to achieve extensions to the service.
ISDN lines are being installed in consultants homes to assist with some of the on-call C.T. reading.
Private practice is undertaken partially at a local private hospital and partially on N.H.S. equipment. Radiologists work together in a consortium.

MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT
Within service units, multi-disciplinary clinical management teams (CMT) have been established. The CMTs actively contribute to the strategic and policy decision making process within the Trust. The membership of CMTs varies between service units but each is chaired by a lead clinician or relevant general manager. In addition, members of the Finance and Contracting and Human Resources Directorates contribute to the work of CMTs as required.
The Trust implemented new management arrangements on 1st May 1998 which included the introduction of a Clinical Management Board. The CMB is responsible for clinical issues in the Trust. The Board will help to develop clinical governance as set out in the Governments recent White Paper.
The CMB membership is comprised of the Medical Director, the Director of Nursing, the Clinical Management Team Leaders and representatives from Clinical Audit and the Professions Allied to Medicine.
The Trust is lead by the Trust Executive which is comprised of the Directors, the General Managers and the four Senior Lead Clinicians.

Department
Radiologists all attend CMT meetings along with the Clinical & Life Support Services General Manager, the Radiology Services Manager and some of the Section Heads. The lead clinician role is a rotating one, by agreement with colleagues (a voting system is used where necessary). The radiographic team provides excellent support. Devolution of responsibility to the lowest and most appropriate level is supported.
Funding
Full year budget for Radiology £2,633,413.
ACADEMIC
The post-holder will be expected to take part in the teaching and audit responsibilities of the department and will be encouraged to initiate, supervise and carry out research activities within the department.
There is an active postgraduate medical centre on the Peterborough District Hospital site with a regular programme of education activities. The postholder will be involved in teaching both visiting undergraduates and postgraduate staff on an occasional basis.
Clinical governance and audit
The Trust has an established framework for clinical governance, which incorporates a well-developed clinical audit programme and the post-holder will be encouraged to be active in undertaking research in this area. This will build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust, Transformation Team and Clinical Audit Department.
Priority is given to clinical effectiveness and evidence based practice, and this is reflected in the Trusts and departments procedures, with the aim of leading to integrated care pathways.
Continuing medical education
The Trust recognises the importance of Continuing Medical Education and actively encourages consultant staff to give priority to their continuing professional development. There is provision of appropriate facilities and study leave expenses of £750 per annum (currently under review).
Work programme
Timetable of radiologists commitments
is regularly reviewed and adjusted to meet the changing needs of the service and staff. A timetable will be derived in consultation with new appointees according to skills and requirements. Whole-time consultants work seven fixed clinical sessions with three flexible sessions available for audit, administration, teaching and education. Part-time consultants have a pro rata allocation of their timetable. Within the framework of a pre-determined rota, radiologists are asked to show some flexibility in providing cover for colleagues, the roster is planned three weeks in advance.
Consultants have access to all imaging modalities according to specialist interest and expertise. On each session one radiologist fulfils the role of "duty radiologist" (usually combined with "hot reporting") to facilitate and channel access for clinician queries.
Multidisciplinary team meetings are established with appropriate specialties with clinico-radiological meetings for others. Post-holders will be expected to contribute and to lead meetings as appropriate.
Emergency on-call duties currently equate to one in six covering weekdays and weekends. Each consultant covers for the absence of colleagues on a reciprocal basis. The roster is planned several months in advance taking account of personal requirements and holidays. On-call commitment will become less frequent with the appointment of further radiologists.
Arrangements for annual leave
Six weeks per annum by arrangement with colleagues.
Visiting
Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the Trust. To arrange this or to discuss the post in more detail please contact Dr. Catherine Brown, Consultant Radiologist, or Randle Milne, Radiology Services Manager on 0800 085 8598
SUPPORTING INFORMATION
Peterborough and Environs Catchment Population
Lush green countryside surrounds Peterborough, punctuated with picturesque villages and bustling market towns. At the north of Cambridgeshire and close to the counties of Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Norfolk, the surrounding area is varied and rich in character.
Stamford is generally acknowledged as one of the most historic and beautiful stone-built towns in England. The towns intricate street patterns retain their medieval design with narrow passageways and cobbled streets housing a wealth of architecturally important buildings and interesting shops.
Burghley House famous for its horse trials lies on the outskirts of the town and both the house and gardens are open to the public throughout the summer. Bourne and The Deepings possess some fine period buildings. Bourne is a small pleasant market town and the birthplace of William Cecil, Lord Burghley and creator of Burghley House.
The Deepings is an historic group of villages comprising Deeping St James, Market Deeping and Deeping Gate. Market Deeping, with its wide streets, old stone-walled houses and inns, reflects its importance as a major stopping place on the London to Lincoln stage route. Oundle in Northamptonshire, famous for its school and historic associations, is another stone built town with a wealth of local interest.
Education
Peterborough is proud of its excellent education facilities over 30 new schools and major extensions have opened since 1970. The citys secondary schools have an average pupil-to-teacher ratio of less than 17 to 1; approximately 1600 of an average 2000 school leavers go on to further education.
In the independent sector there are six boys schools (including Oundle and Uppingham Public Schools), three girls schools and four mixed (including Oakham) all within daily travel of Peterborough and all taking boarders. Peterborough Regional College caters for over 10,000 full-time and part-time students.
Recreation and Leisure
Peterborough offers a rich choice of indoor and outdoor recreation. A 2,000-acre park stretches along the valley of the River Nene from the heart of the city to the A1, six miles away. There are lakes for sailing, windsurfing and boating, three golf courses and a pitch and putt course, stretches of fine course fishing water, a purpose-built rowing course, a riding centre and adventure play features for children. In addition there are acres of beautiful meadow and woodland.
The Nene Valley Railway operates a unique collection of steam locomotives and rolling stock from all over Europe on six miles of track through Nene Park.
On the Embankment, the Key Theatre is an attractive venue for drama and other performing arts and each year the city hosts top quality orchestras, instrumentalists and singers. Stamford and Oundle also have their own theatres.
Travel
Peterborough City has excellent road and inter-city rail links with easy access to London and other major cities. As a designated development city, Peterborough has benefited from careful planning of the roadway system with dual carriageway ring roads from the A1 to the A47.
Shopping
Peterborough has a unique blend of old and new in its city centre. Queensgate, opened early in 1982 is considered to be one of the finest centres in the Region and the Westgate Arcade links Queensgate to the old shopping centres. The Rivergate development was opened in the summer of 1989.
The historic market towns of Stamford, Oundle, Bourne and the Deepings offer traditional shops, whilst Cambridge, Milton Keynes and London are all within easy driving or rail distance from Peterborough.
Housing
Peterborough has seen a tremendous growth of housing availability, with many variations of design in sympathy with the surroundings.
